AAA Tech's Guide to Preparing Your Car for Winter
RALEIGH, N.C. — As the temperatures have taken a dip, it's crucial to be aware that this could potentially lead to car troubles for some. According to a AAA technician, for those who haven't yet winterized their vehicle, it's high time to take action.
Why Winterize Your Car?
Doing routine car maintenance throughout the year is of utmost importance. A routine check varies depending on the car manufacturer's industry standard. AAA technician Matt Holder, who has been working on cars for 20 years, emphasizes the significance of winterizing your car when dealing with the colder months. When it comes to the colder months, the first thing you should do is give your car a winterization check. This includes simple yet essential tasks like ensuring your windshield wipers are in good condition. As Holder explains, "Make sure it’s a nice and smooth surface, with no ridges or tears. This way, it can effectively clear the windshield in case of frost or similar conditions."Next, it's time to open the hood and check the battery. In the summer, the heat can drain the battery, making it less suitable for the following winter months. That's why a routine maintenance check of the car's battery is essential. Holder advises, "Make sure your terminals look good and there is no corrosion."Holder not only loves his job but also takes pride in helping people save money throughout the year. He recommends checking your car's fluids. "Check the condition of the fluids and when they were last serviced. This helps keep the maintenance cost of the vehicle down and extends its longevity," he says.Holder believes that car technicians play a vital role in preventing potential car accidents by ensuring routine car maintenance. He also recommends having good tread on the tires of your vehicle and maintaining good tire pressure, especially during the winter months when the roads can become slippery. "Check your tread depth and tire pressure, which can be found on the inside of the driver-side door," he adds.Routine car maintenance should be a year-round practice rather than being done at the last minute when bad weather hits. By following these simple steps and maintaining your vehicle regularly, you can ensure that it runs smoothly and safely throughout the year.
